I composed this hymn line by line, throughout the season of Advent, using the featured daily words from Rethink Church’s Advent 2021 Photo-a-Day Challenge.
I could not have imagined the the heartbreak that these Advent days would hold for so many of God’s beloved. The completed hymn reflects this reality. I pray it also reflects the hope that is ours–not only on Christmas morning, but every day of our lives.
Hear Our Hearts, O God of Promise
(sung to the tune of Comfort, Comfort, Now My People)
Hear our hearts, O God of promise.
Mend our hopes; fulfill Your dream.
Time unravels frayed intentions.
Justice is a stagnant stream.
Let Your righteousness arise.
Steadfast Love, renew our lives.
You have called us; don’t forsake us.
Breathe new hope into this dry dust.
No mere messenger can save us.
You Yourself prepare our way.
Through long nights, You seek our shelter.
With delight, our fears allay.
Love endures, bearing all things.
Living Water’s offering
Hope at home among the ashes.
Fear gives way as God advances.
Fed by grace, we grow in freedom.
Gladness dances into view.
Even now, we sing Your victory
As we wait to be renewed.
Gather us into Your heart.
Voices past, great strength impart.
Bless us as we watch for morning,
Awed by calm amid this storming.
Bethlehem abounds with wonder
Peace on earth? Listen amazed.
Mary’s baby bears God’s favor.
Treasure how this world is saved.
Jesus meets us where we dwell.
We have seen Immanuel.
As we worship, tears are falling.
Comfort all this Christmas morning.
Thank you, Pastor Stacey, for sharing and caring for us with your meaningful, beautiful Advent meditations. I am grateful.
