Prepare: Advent Day 3

PREPARE

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Psalm 23:5

We’re three days into Advent. Are you feeling the pressure of Christmas preparations?

I hope not.

But if you are, here’s an invitation to spend a moment with Psalm 23 today.

Joy to the World is fine and good. And yes, let every heart prepare him room is a noble command. But today, I want to remember that any preparing of my heart for the birth of Jesus there is the Holy Spirit’s work to do. Not mine.

And I also want to remember–I need to remember–that my Shepherd is making preparations for me. For you. For this beloved world.

Your Shepherd prepares a table for you in the presence of your enemies.

Who are your enemies these days? What makes you anxious? What keeps you awake at night? What tempts you to give up? What hurts you? What threatens you? What sneaks up on you and robs you of joy and peace?

Now imagine being able to sit down and enjoy a relaxed, nourishing, wholehearted meal in the presence of all those enemies. How protected and strengthened and safe would you need to feel in order to enjoy a feast with all those enemies gathered around?

That’s the security your Shepherd provides for you.

You are secure in the loving care of your Savior.

My photo today is of the most delicious salad I’ve ever eaten. It included pickled onions (who knew?!?), stone fruit (delicious!), and feta cheese (always a favorite!). I ordered it at La Rana (a highly recommended restaurant here in Decorah), but God prepared it for me. It was absolutely what I needed at that moment–summer joy, and the promise of health and wellness, in every single bite.

When have you experienced God’s shepherding provision?

Your heart has been prepared to welcome Jesus. It’s ready–you’re ready–to sit up to the table and rejoice in God’s love for you, a love that stands tall against even the most destructive enemies. Amen.
