I’m writing today’s post as a new member of the Five Minute Friday online writing community. Learn more here: http://fiveminutefriday.com/linkup/. Each Thursday night, a writing prompt is shared. This week’s is BETTER.
Better seems like a word best reserved for conversations about butter vs. margarine (butter is certainly better!) and maybe even to show loyalty for your favorite team vs. its in-state rival (Go Hawks!).
Where better gets me in trouble is when I start using it to compare myself to others…or even to compare myself to previous versions of myself.
Am I better when I’m eating my vegetarian soups daily instead of stopping at Culver’s constantly? I’m healthier, certainly, but I’m not better. Who’s to say that the Culver’s stretches aren’t necessary and needed? That they aren’t preparing me for some new beginning that’s just out of view?
Bottom line, with 45 seconds left to write: God doesn’t perceive me as better or worse at any given moment, so why should I see myself that way?
Why should you?
Today, rest in the grace that there is no better version of you that you must work hard on your own to create. God is at work in you to bring life and love out of all that you are right now. There’s no better or worse when it comes to God’s good creation. There is only beloved.
Peace…
Delighted you’re with us. For me, FMF has been a literal lifeline; the love and support I’ve found here has helped me bloody the noses of pancreatic cancer and non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and I’m four years past my sell-by date.
Couldn’t have done it alone.
All I can offer on the topic of the post is, don’t be better. Be you.
It’s enough.
#2 at FMF this week.

Amen! It’s His-story after all. Thanks for your 5 minutes today. I enjoyed them.
Thank you, Kim!
Thank you for this!
Thank you for reading and commenting, Mary Jo!
Welcome to FMF! I’m glad you’ve joined in with us! And I agree, it’s so easy to compare ourselves to others or to see ourselves as better if we keep to certain standards. It’s so reassuring to know that God loves us just as we are, always. Visiting from FMF#24.
Thank you, Lesley. I’m so glad to be here!
